Hydronic systems work in a similar manner to a home forced hot water system. The water is heated in a burner and then circulated to different locations in the boat where individual air handlers can respond to multiple thermostats allowing different heating zones. While the space required to run the heat lines is considerably less than the 4-inch ducts for hot air systems the labor is greater in the hydronic system. Other advantages to this method are the heating unit can be used to heat domestic water and/or a loop can be plumbed through the heat exchanger on the engine to preheat the engine in cold weather. An added benefit are the heating loop will aid in keeping the boat dry particularly in closed spaces such as lockers. This type of heating system provides a more comfortable heat especially for live-aboards.
Ocean Link sells, services and installs both ITR Hurricane and Webasto heating systems. These systems are sold in an ala carte fashion. In order to spec out the correct size unit we will need to calculater the BTU requirements of your vessel. In order to do this we will ask you to provide the area of each living space (L X W X H) and how many windows there are in each living area you intend to heat. This will enable us to put together a basic bill of materials and pricing for the system of your choice.
